Discover and Solve
Perhaps the idea of starting a software company feels daunting, overly ambitious. However, MicroSaaS represents a more manageable approach. You may have already entertained the thought of diving into this venture. Yet, a common obstacle soon emerges: "What exactly should I build?" Surprisingly, this question need not be the barrier it appears to be. All you need to do is take a closer look at yourself. Evaluate your skills, your passions, and your superpowers. Within them lies the perfect software solution to a problem you've always wanted to solve. Alternatively, what you identify may not necessarily be a problem, but rather an improvement you've often contemplated. It might be a subtle issue or a potential enhancement that hasn't captured your full attention yet, but it's there, waiting for you to uncover and address it.
Escape the Nine-to-Five
This isn't just about solving a problem for yourself; it's about addressing a need shared by many others who are facing the same challenges or seeking the same improvements. There is a market out there eager for your unique contributions. By monetizing your skills, passions, and superpowers, you can create a MicroSaaS that either solves a significant problem or introduces a valuable improvement. This venture offers more than just income; it provides a pathway to break free from your nine-to-five job. So, let's self-assess. Let's discover your superpowers. Let's uncover that problem, improvement, or solution that's hidden within everything you do and all the knowledge you possess. Let's identify that unique opportunity. Then, let's build a MicroSaaS around it and break free from the nine-to-five grind.
Start Here: Begin with a Self-Assessment
Embarking on the journey of creating a MicroSaaS begins with a powerful tool: self-assessment. This process is not just about identifying what you are good at, but also discovering what drives you, what excites you, and ultimately, what differentiates you. Through self-assessment, you dive deep into your own expertise, hobbies, and interests, laying a solid foundation for spotting unique MicroSaaS opportunities that align with your passions.
The insights gained from this introspective journey are invaluable. They help you identify specific problems and gaps within your areas of expertise. By understanding your own strengths and passions, you can pinpoint where you can make the most significant impact. This isn't just about finding a niche; it's about finding your niche—a place where your particular skills and interests meet the needs of the market.
Self-assessment empowers you to move from a state of uncertainty to one of clarity and direction. It transforms the daunting task of starting a new venture into an exciting exploration of your potential. As you align your personal strengths with market needs, you not only increase your chances of success but also ensure that the work you do is genuinely fulfilling. In this way, self-assessment is not just the first step but a crucial ongoing practice that supports the sustainable growth of your MicroSaaS business, keeping you engaged and motivated as you progress from idea to execution.
Turn Self-Assessment into Your Next MicroSaaS Idea
I remember feeling stuck, not knowing what to build. I wanted to create a MicroSaaS, but figuring out what to build kept blocking me from moving forward. How do you even find a problem in a niche? What niche should you start with?
One day, while reading a book about marketing funnels, one of my interests, I stumbled upon a process that I thought was very tedious, but that it was a given in this industry. That's when it hit me: this same process could be automated and augmented by AI. I hadn’t seen anyone try it with the perspective and target user base I had in mind, and it perfectly addressed a specific problem in a niche. It was ideal for a MicroSaaS.
But was it enough?
I was elated to have come up with what I thought was a great idea, but doubts crept in. What if it wasn’t? Would I waste my time building it, only to face the same problem of coming up with another idea to try? That's when I reflected on how I had come up with the idea in the first place and decided to create a framework around it. This way, both myself and others could have an easier time generating MicroSaaS ideas. After much thinking, reading, and researching, I also discovered an effective way to validate the idea before building anything. But I’m getting ahead of myself—I will cover idea validation in future newsletters editions.
Meet The Reverse Market MicroSaaS Ideation Framework
The framework has five phases:
Phase 1: Self-Assessment
Phase 2: Identification
Phase 3: Ideation
Phase 4: Refinement
Phase 5: Conceptualization Phase
The first phase of the framework, which we will cover in this newsletter, is assessment. Future phases will be covered in future editions, so subscribe to stay updated and not miss any steps. Let's get started with this first phase.
For this first phase, I needed a method for systematically mapping and identifying my skills, expertise, and passions and I needed a way to organize and rank these elements so that in future stages of the framework, I could more easily identify top opportunities that matched my level of interest.
To achieve this, the process begins with the creation of a detailed skills table. This table divides your abilities into different skill sets and areas of expertise. Next, you enhance this table by adding columns to rate your enthusiasm for each listed skill. This allows you to visually identify which skills align with your expertise and pique your interest.
List Your Skills and Experiences: Start by writing down all of your skills and past experiences, both professional and personal. You could include everything from technical skills and languages you know, to hobbies and projects you've undertaken. Broaden your list to better identify your true areas of expertise.
Reflect on Feedback: Consider the past feedback you have received, whether from colleagues, friends, or in performance reviews. Consider the skills that others have highlighted as your strengths. Validate your self-assessment and pinpoint areas where you excel naturally by incorporating this external perspective.
Rate Your Passion: Rate your level of passion or interest for each skill or experience listed. Use a simple scale (e.g., 1-5) to quantify how much you enjoy or are interested in each area. Identify which skills you are both good at and love working with, guiding your focus towards more fulfilling pursuits.
Consider each skill's practical use and personal significance to make the process more actionable and grounded in real-world applications. This approach helps you identify areas where you are both skilled and passionate, which lays the foundation for creating a viable and personally fulfilling MicroSaaS idea. By methodically cataloging and evaluating your skills and passions, you create a clear path to discover your most compelling and motivating interests. This is important for maintaining long-term engagement in your MicroSaaS project.
AI Can Assist and Simplify
After going through the process several times, I decided to use AI to help me with the assessment process. Indeed, it did not disappoint. I have solid prompts that really help this process move along, especially if you get stuck, have a brain fart, or struggle with self-assessment. I will include these prompts with the full framework download. If you are interested, subscribe, and I'll send you an email when it's ready for consumption.
